What is your point? What were YOU doing during the Hurricane? I doubt you were in NO helping anyone. It's not a shot at you, but the President does not need to be in his rain jacket on scene 10 minutes after the rain starts to fall in order to be doing what he needs to do.

Good response, mjr. What if San Francisco or L.A. had been hit with a big earthquake at the same time New Orleans was hit? Some people would be condemning Bush for not being in both places at once.

Rather than raise money, offer shelter, feed, clothe, or comfort the evacuees in this disaster . . . while many volunteers are working in shelters, helping with the clean-up and recovery from Plaquemines to Pensacola, some would rather play with PhotoShop. Some folks have just too much time on their hands . . . If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

Obviously this is a joke, so don't get too bent out of shape...

I'm not saying he nor ANY President land in the middle of the devastation to hand out water or give reassuring hugs. But anything beats sitting around with your thumb up your azz!
Especially when you command the GREATEST forces on the planet!

Isn't Bush in NO now, I think I saw pictures of him hugging affected victims also. He's got other agendas as well, as a President you cannot let one tragedy take ALL of your attention. Believe it or not, he still has 290 other million Americans to worry about.

I took the pics as a joke, and I laughed even harder when I saw some people get all defensive about the President, lol...

"Don't bash on MY president!!! blah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! So what? He posted up a photoshop...try not to let it ruin your day people...

Here's a question? Why did Bush arrive on scene at the disaster and then congratulate Mike Brown on the job he HADN'T done ("You're doing a heckuva job Brownie!") only to later remove him from the disaster relief coordinating efforts and possibly altogether as head of FEMA? How do you congratulate a guy on a great job, then a week later demote him as a precursor to his impending firing?

"You're doing such a great job Mr. Brown that I'm inclined to fire your azz!"

The humor may not be in the best taste but it seems that practically anything that isn't praising Bush is viewed as Bush-bashing 'round these parts. But anybody notice the subtle gesture on G-Dub's left-hand while strumming on the guitar? (ha ha)

I am by no means a Bush supporter, actually far from it, but I also think he's getting much more credit than he deserves. My question is where was the governor and the mayor during all of this? (aside from crying and cursing on radio and TV) And what were they doing prior to this? Why was the city never prepared for ANOTHER cat5 hurricane? It's not like they never had one before? Why was the mandatory decree of evacuation given only 20 hours prior? And then why were there no preparation by the local government even when 3 days prior people were buying and stocking up on food and supplies? Bush could have done a lot (which he didn't) but all the blame cannot rest with him.

How can you argue with this? The beurocracy moves slowly but when the Mayors disaster plans for communication rested on generators with not enough fuel to last very long and two old satelitte phones that ran down quickly and could not be recharged, the concentration on W is funny, as I assume the intent of the pictures was, not to make any sort of constructive statement. Constructive statements don't come from doctored photos. Whether you could have planned for Katrina's effect is very debatable, the mayor and governor have been told for years that a Cat 5 would cause catastrophic flooding. But once you move on from the mayor and governor's criminal lack of preparation you have to move on to people's ability to accept reality and respond quicly. Here the mayor and governor also earn low marks as far as I am concerned. Angelflight has over a hundred doctors and nurses that they will fly in and the governors office has told them no because they don't know what to do with them. There will be plenty of blame to go around. I doubt the mayor and governor peg the intelligence meter any more than W for disaster management. At least W got things going once the word began to get out. Hard to blame him because the city of NO and the state of LA were so poorly prepared to respond the disaster on their doorstep.

I suppose the power outage in LA right now is Bush's fault too?

Default Bush was an excellent leader during Katrina...

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05254/568876.stm

The federal response to Katrina was not as portrayed
Source: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05254/568876.stm
Sunday, September 11, 2005

It is settled wisdom among journalists that the federal response to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina was unconscionably slow.

"Mr. Bush's performance last week will rank as one of the worst ever during a dire national emergency," wrote New York Times columnist Bob Herbert in a somewhat more strident expression of the conventional wisdom.

But the conventional wisdom is the opposite of the truth.

Jason van Steenwyk is a Florida Army National Guardsman who has been mobilized six times for hurricane relief. He notes that:

"The federal government pretty much met its standard time lines, but the volume of support provided during the 72-96 hour was unprecedented. The federal response here was faster than Hugo, faster than Andrew, faster than Iniki, faster than Francine and Jeanne."

For instance, it took five days for National Guard troops to arrive in strength on the scene in Homestead, Fla. after Hurricane Andrew hit in 1992. But after Katrina, there was a significant National Guard presence in the afflicted region in three.

Journalists who are long on opinions and short on knowledge have no idea what is involved in moving hundreds of tons of relief supplies into an area the size of England in which power lines are down, telecommunications are out, no gasoline is available, bridges are damaged, roads and airports are covered with debris, and apparently have little interest in finding out.

So they libel as a "national disgrace" the most monumental and successful disaster relief operation in world history.

I write this column a week and a day after the main levee protecting New Orleans breached. In the course of that week:

More than 32,000 people have been rescued, many plucked from rooftops by Coast Guard helicopters.

The Army Corps of Engineers has all but repaired the breaches and begun pumping water out of New Orleans.

Shelter, food and medical care have been provided to more than 180,000 refugees.

Journalists complain that it took a whole week to do this. A former Air Force logistics officer had some words of advice for us in the Fourth Estate on his blog, Moltenthought:

"We do not yet have teleporter or replicator technology like you saw on 'Star Trek' in college between hookah hits and waiting to pick up your worthless communications degree while the grown-ups actually engaged in the recovery effort were studying engineering.

"The United States military can wipe out the Taliban and the Iraqi Republican Guard far more swiftly than they can bring 3 million Swanson dinners to an underwater city through an area the size of Great Britain which has no power, no working ports or airports, and a devastated and impassable road network.

"You cannot speed recovery and relief efforts up by prepositioning assets (in the affected areas) since the assets are endangered by the very storm which destroyed the region.

"No amount of yelling, crying and mustering of moral indignation will change any of the facts above."

"You cannot just snap your fingers and make the military appear somewhere," van Steenwyk said.

Guardsmen need to receive mobilization orders; report to their armories; draw equipment; receive orders and convoy to the disaster area. Guardsmen driving down from Pennsylvania or Navy ships sailing from Norfolk can't be on the scene immediately.

Relief efforts must be planned. Other than prepositioning supplies near the area likely to be afflicted (which was done quite efficiently), this cannot be done until the hurricane has struck and a damage assessment can be made. There must be a route reconnaissance to determine if roads are open, and bridges along the way can bear the weight of heavily laden trucks.

And federal troops and Guardsmen from other states cannot be sent to a disaster area until their presence has been requested by the governors of the afflicted states.

Exhibit A on the bill of indictment of federal sluggishness is that it took four days before most people were evacuated from the Louisiana Superdome.

The levee broke Tuesday morning. Buses had to be rounded up and driven from Houston to New Orleans across debris-strewn roads. The first ones arrived Wednesday evening. That seems pretty fast to me.

A better question -- which few journalists ask -- is why weren't the roughly 2,000 municipal and school buses in New Orleans utilized to take people out of the city before Katrina struck?
