Current Bush Thoughts..
A very simple but open thread..
I'd like to hear the opinions of everyone on the subject of how they believe Bush would currently be remembered. A legacy? A tragedy of a presidency?
Let's hear it guys.

History is going to be very kind to Bush.......MUCH kinder than the picture the Kerry people and left-wing Europeans are painting. He will be remembered as the president who responded to the greatest national crisis since World War II and the 1962 Cuban Missile affair. He (and Tony Blair) will be remembered as the presidents who brought Saddam down even against Franch and German opposition. He will be remembered as the president with the most racially Diverse cabinet in history. He will be remembered as the president who first really took BIG steps to get Osama-Ben-laden.....we, of course, don't know yet if he will eventually be caught.
On the negative side, Bush will also, rightly or wrongly, be remembered as the president who presided over a huge turnaround in thre Federal budget from a big surplus to a big defecit, he will be remembered for the controversial 2000 election results even though every recount showed him ahead, and he will be remembered for his somewhat sloppy speaking style, with things like run-on sentenences and slurring of words.

I'm not sure if you can pose this question to the liberals in fifty years or so. Why do I say that? Aren't they going through deep psychological therapy to forget him completely? Rid their "selective memory" of him?
"A Great American President who lead the war on terrorism"!! Plain and simple.

Notice I didn't say "and won".
It's going to take many years to win well beyond Bush's second term providing we have the leadership that follows in his footsteps!

I think mmarshall gives a nice early synopsis, but we really need to wait until the end of his term to see how iraq, the economy, the job situation, etc. plays out. IMO, it is really too early to determine an honest and informed answer to this question.

Viewed through the lens of history: the great and the small . . .
I believe that mmarshall hit it on the head. Short-term, Bush seems to be handling the war on terror well. Afghanistan, Iraq and others to come are only single theaters of the operation. This conflict will not be resolved in the next four years, nor probably within the next ten to twenty. The ultimate suppression or destruction of the terror networks will write the final review of his war policy. On the domestic front, the tax cuts and subsequent reinvestment of capital will begin to produce results that will be helpful, but may not be fully realized until the war starts winding down.
The long-term outlook is unclear. I believe that the Carter and Reagan legacies are only now beginning to emerge. Carter appears to have been a genuinely good man, but flawed with weakness. Reagan, elected on his ability to project an image, grew into the job, and will probably be viewed as one of our greatest presidents. It will be a long time before we can analyze the impact of George W. Bush on the sweep of history.

who writes history...
I think historians should interview the world they wanna write about before forming an opinion out of alignment with the rest of the world whom they are influencing thru education or otherwise.

I think a high percentage of americans, even liberals, agree that Reagan was a great modern day president.
