Default Red States Feed at Federal Trough, Blue States Supply the Feed

http://taxprof.typepad.com/taxprof_b...ates_feed.html

The Tax Foundation has released a fascinating report showing which states benefit from federal tax and spending policies, and which states foot the bill.

The report shows that of the 32 states (and the District of Columbia) that are "winners" -- receiving more in federal spending than they pay in federal taxes -- 76% are Red States that voted for George Bush in 2000. Indeed, 17 of the 20 (85%) states receiving the most federal spending per dollar of federal taxes paid are Red States. Here are the Top 10 states that feed at the federal trough (with Red States highlighted in bold):

States Receiving Most in Federal Spending Per Dollar of Federal Taxes Paid:

1. D.C. ($6.17)
2. North Dakota ($2.03)
3. New Mexico ($1.89)
4. Mississippi ($1.84)
5. Alaska ($1.82)
6. West Virginia ($1.74)
7. Montana ($1.64)
8. Alabama ($1.61)
9. South Dakota ($1.59)
10. Arkansas ($1.53)

In contrast, of the 16 states that are "losers" -- receiving less in federal spending than they pay in federal taxes -- 69% are Blue States that voted for Al Gore in 2000. Indeed, 11 of the 14 (79%) of the states receiving the least federal spending per dollar of federal taxes paid are Blue States. Here are the Top 10 states that supply feed for the federal trough (with Blue States highlighted in bold):

States Receiving Least in Federal Spending Per Dollar of Federal Taxes Paid:

1. New Jersey ($0.62)
2. Connecticut ($0.64)
3. New Hampshire ($0.68)

4. Nevada ($0.73)
5. Illinois ($0.77)
6. Minnesota ($0.77)

7. Colorado ($0.79)
8. Massachusetts ($0.79)
9. California ($0.81)
10. New York ($0.81)

Two states -- Florida and Oregon (coincidentally, the two closest states in the 2000 Presidential election) -- received $1.00 in federal spending for each $1.00 in federal taxes paid.

Of course the red states receive more money. They've been in charge for 4 years.

I bet if we went back farther in time the results would be similar

Which states FEED the country, PERIOD? Where will you find most of the country's farms, farmers and ranchers that put food on our tables?
Then red states, of course.

Case closed.

Most of those highlighted receiving states aren't really farm states so I doubt farm subsidies play into this equation all that much.

And it's pretty easy to see why North Dakota has that sort of ratio (as it is for South Dakota and Montana).

Nobody lives there!

But the Federal government still has to provide a certain level of assistance for roads, entitlements, education, etc.

New Mexico may be feeling the burden of its non-legal population ....

Mississippi - not really sure why they're recieving so much ... except that, again, its generally a "poorer" population paying less taxes that still requires a minimum level of federal government assistance.

The rest are lost on me.

This isn't indicative of much beyond our government doing what it's supposed to ...

I will say this: the left, being so pluralistic, should be proud that there's such a disparity going towards supporting less fortunate populations.

True, CA produces a lot of truck-fruit and vegetable crops, but California agriculture is a drop in the bucket compared to the huge areas across the Midwest, South, and Plains that went for Bush....most of the nation's Corn Belt from Ohio to Iowa, part of the Dairy Belt from Iowa to Michigan , ALL of the Cotton and Corn Belt across the South, the citrus areas in Florida and south Texas, ALL of the enormous wheat belt from Northwest Texas all the way north to Canada, and, of course, all the cattle ranches in Texas and beef cattle ranches in Iowa. When you look at the election and the country as a WHOLE, not just California, it is clear that most of the people that feed us and keep us clothed went for Bush....though, to be honest, much of our clothing is imported from Asia.

It's the population silly. Has nothing to do Blue vs Red!

Think about it....The top ten receiver's largest city is probably Birmingham, Little Rock, or DC. not really much when compared to the Northeast, Chicago, Vegas, and Colorado (Denver).

The top ten contributers are all in the Northeast (NY, NJ, Conn, NH, Mass, CA,), Illinois (with Chicago), and Colorado (which has Denver and the ski resorts with lots of wealth), Nevada (with Vegas and Gambling taxes (also includes Atlantic City, NJ in that concept)). Now Minn., not sure how they got there.

Besides there are quite a few state parks and other items in these less populous states that are visited and used by many in the paying states that absorb a certain portion of tax dollars. So it's not like they aren't getting anything back for their tax dollars. What, should we level Manhattan and make a state park there? I doubt it. And some of those states (ND, SD, NM) include Indian Reservations where tax dollars are allocated as well.

Besides I thought liberals loved to give to the less fortunate. What's the problem? (j/k)

Nice to know that Fla. is neutral.
