Hello!

Mechanic just changed diffrential fluid and said they used 3 litres (about 3.2 qts) of oil. Manual says to use 1 litre.

I wonder i there is space to use 3 instead of 1. And if it is dangerous.

Or he was just looking for an excuse to overcharge.

But my main concern is: is it safe to have more oil than recommended in the manual. Mechs here just do not care about these things but I do.

Not safe in engine and transmission. I would think same reason applies, I.e., too much pressure. I would remove some if it was mine.

The differentials are splash lubricated unlike engine or transmissions, a little overfill wont harm your diff. The requirement is to have enough oil covering all the teeth at the bottom of the ring gear so that the ring and pinion gears get enough lubrication.You are better off having a little more then having less.

I dont think you could overfill the differential at all? All of the excess oil will come back out from the fill hole....

And for AWD you have to drain/fill both front/rear differentials.....

I read somewhere that the there is not need to replace the front differential oil in separate because it gets filled along with the transmission. Did I get it wrong>

My AWD didn't seem to have a separate front dif?

I could be wrong but I think I only replaced the transmission fluid, rear dif and the transfer case when I was doing all my fluids.

A while back, on my RX330 - dealership charged me for 3.3L instead of 2L. As it turns out, what they did was punch in a fluid change for the RX300 which has a front diff as well. (I get transfer case and front diff confused nonetheless its 3 x 1L gear oil fluid changes on the 300 vs 2 on the 330). Mechanic did not overfill.
