I believe my alternator on my 2000 GS400 is going out and want to take it in for testing. The problem is the alternator is blocked by the power steering ump pulley. I took off the bolt on the pulley but its still on there tight so would guess I need to go get a ps pulley puller loaner tool to take off. I read somewehre else about remove the ps pump itself instead.

What have you guys dones to get around this pulley issue?

Spray pulley with PB Blaster several times let it soak in it should be fairly easy to take off, also you can TAP on it while turning it do not beat on it just a bunch of little taps with a small hammer,
you want to break the tension not break it! LOL!

Just remove the PS pulley, just like bonesnj0 says.. a greasing and mild tapping will do the work..

I used a pulley puller from Autozone. Rental. Came right off.

This is what I ended up doing, came right off also. Snaking the alternator out the bottom was a pita, ended up disconnecting the sway bar for a little more wiggle room as I read in another thread.

I wackd mine with a mallet and it came off easy. Your a quitter! I got mine out without removing the sway bar. U just gotta keep turning it and press against the radiator fan a tad. Easy as pie

Good know, wasn't aware the fit was so tight. When I needed to get to it, I was doing my timing belt, so I didn't have to actually remove mine....Just slide it off it's stud to get to another part. It did seem like there would be plenty of room to lift it straight out the engine bay with the air box and ducting removed but again, I never actually pulled it all the way out. If it would fit, not sure if thats easier than going from the bottom.

I took this photo to remind me how fun it was

I bungeed the coolant hose to pull it out of the way for more work to get my hands down from the top. I didn't want to have to deal with draining the coolant so didn't want to disconnect the hose if at all avoidable. Between the hose and the PS pump and hoses it just didn't seem to fit down from the top. Maybe others have more skills than me but got it in thru the bottom after much wiggling .

I did mine on m gs4 a couple of years ago and I'm almost positive I took it out the bottom also.

Ah....heck yeah, that coolant hose is definately in the way. Again, good to know! Thx for the pic Bogeyman.

I swear if anyone took it out the top they are lying... There is no possible way. From the bottom yes... It took a while. U should have just removed the hose.. I unplugged mine from the engine and used vice grips to clamp it, so it wouldn't leak any.

Just did mine yesterday. Removed power steering pulley and was able to pull it out of the bottom without removing anything else.
