SC430 Navigation Update!
Please assist. I had bought an updated disk for my navigation system for my 2003 SC430. After putting it in my navigation system the display shows updating then kept looping for over 25 min. While reverting to the old disk the nav. displayed requested that I insert the updated disk--I did but the looping continues. Please assist

You need to be sure your disc is good. did you try and re-insert your old disc. I believe if the new disc you loaded had a problem it may have overwrote the firmware and then when you try and go back to the previous disk it will ask for the other disc. I think there are threads reff this problem. Do a search. Let me know about the origin of the disk you bought as i asked above.

I order the disk new from a Lexus dealership. I will do a search with regards to reprogramming our nav.

I think it may be more like flashing the memory. Removing the little battery seems difficult.

Sorry I can't help. I left my "brain truss" in the closet downstairs, as I have not needed it since the surgery.
However, I started out with Ver 1 in my car, as I had one of the first SC430s on the road. A few years later, I got a newer version, probably 2003 or 2004. The newer DVD had on it an update to the Operating System, which added a few new features and a few new icons. I think this is on all Ver 2 and newer data discs. It was always important during the first insertion of this disc not to turn off the car or otherwise interrupt the upgrade to the OS.
Our cars do not have hard drives. There is some non-volatile flash memory in the NAV system which keeps the OS and about 100 stored destinations in flash memory.
My understanding is that there was only 1 upgrade to the OS for our cars, which were among the first to use a DVD for data instead of a CD (which could only hold data for a few states). The upgrade and the install program is put on every version 2 or greater of the NAV data disc - if the disc sees that the system still has Ver 1, it upgrades it. Otherwise, it's just another data disc that gets read when the system gets turned on, just like playing a DVD in your den.
Unless it's a horrible coincidence, my guess is that the OP started with Ver 1 of the OS still on the system, and the new data disc tried to update the OS and did not get it done. We don't know why, and we have no reason to suspect that Mark in Conn is not being forthright in his sketchy description of events. If he says he did not interrupt the process, we all surely believe him.
It's been a while, but the update process does not take more than 2 or 3 minutes, and during that time there is a warning on the screen to keep your hands off everything while the OS is updated. I have used several subsequent data discs, and do not think that there is any upgrade to the OS when first using a third or fourth data disc.
By the way, after the upgrade to the OS, data disc Ver 1 will no longer work, as the data on Ver 2 and up is in a different format. After the upgrade, however, the data disc versions can be interchanged. My two present cars both use the same data discs, so I put the newer one into the car I am taking on a road trip, and there is several years between those discs, and each car reads and uses either of those discs at any time.
As for how to fix the NAV system that is hung up in an endless loop, I have no idea. One thing would be to fully disconnect the NAV system from all battery power to be sure that anything in the volatile memory is lost, then try to insert the newer data disc.
It's also possible that the problem is due to a corrupt disc, in which case you should get a replacement from the seller, although that might not fix the existing problem. To see if the disc is readable, just put it into your computer and see if you can read the files with a decent file viewer (or with "Windows Explorer," if no decent file viewer, like Directory Opus, is available). The disc is a double layer DVD and should have about 8GB of data on it. If the file viewer can see the file directory, the disc is probably OK.
You can also give up and take it to the dealer to see what happens, but that will be costly and dealerships do not always have tech-savy technicians on staff - there is just too much to know about cars today and all their electronic components and accessories to guarantee that the guy that can replace that head gasket can also adjust the audio.

Thanks for the update. I did take it to the dealer and they wanted $6,400 for an new system & $1,800 for a rebuilt (not sure of the correct term.
I ordered a new nav player and it's on the way. We will see if that's the fix
As one of the orginal members of club lexus, this is the 1st time our brain trust came up with no resolution ;(

If it were me I would buy a garmin navigation unit with life time updates.The Lexus navigation unit from 2003 is antiquated to say the least you also do not have blue tooth with the factory nav . if
you did go to the Garmin unit that has blue tooth and could pair your phone to it. In fact I have a Garmi zumo 550 unit that works on my motorcycle and came with the car kit and I use that all the time the mapping software is cheaper to update and its portable as well.
I hope that your able to get your unit fixed .

You probably cannot get a complete built-in replacement due to the screen size, retracting cover, etc.

Great idea. Will they install it flush like the existing unit so that we may tilt it back & forth?
