Hey soooooo I have a 92 240sx coupe that is aching for a new heart. I am doing a 1uz swap and already have my motor mounts /trans adapter plate/ blah blah blah. I have asked this question on Zilvia and other Nissan forums to no eval. My question is, Are there any differences in the block of the 96 1uz to the 98 with vvti? Are the motor mounts the same? I know people have swapped 1uz's into 240's in the past but I have never seen one with a 98,99,2000 VVTI engine? Are these worth it? On paper its a better motor. I can get a vvti motor for around $500 more than a 96 1UZ. So money is not a big deal. Just wondering if it is harder to swap or anything.

Blocks are the same, mounts are the same. Heads are different

My SC400 is a VVT-i UZ. Ive never been in a UZ with no VVT-i but the difference is significant in stock form. I have raced a non VVT-i one and I beat them by a great margin. Pros and cons are as follows for both engines:

VVT-i UZ: Pros: Better Stock performance 290 HP over 250-260, Better gas mileage(not a hybrid by any means but they get about 4-5 mpg better in city and around 4-8 better HWY. More refined and newer engine with more technology, different(not many people have this engine)
Cons: Not too many performance parts out there, no marketed intake but the K&N intake and SRT intake for the GS400 will work. Headers require some modifications to make work(I read an article dont remember what it is) Very few have supercharged this engine and its expensive to do it. More expensive to buy and fix than older UZ.

Non VVT-i UZ: Pros: Cheaper to buy, easier to find parts for, (people say these last longer but that I feel is a biased opinion). Decent stock power
Cons: Miles are usually very high on these engines, less power than vvti, less gas mileage by a great margin, less refined.

Verdict: If you want the stock power and will be happy without not too many mods than get the newer one, its a better driving experience and just a more refined engine. If you want to modify your project car then get the older UZ, more parts for it and cheaper overall cost. Either one is a good buy, Lexus Quality

I'm just guessing here, but throwing a VVTI in place of a 1UZ shouldn't really be any problem at all right? What kinda problems would I run into if I swapped my 1UZ for a VVTI? I'm sure this has been discussed, but figured I'd ask in here while this threads active. More stock power, and better MPG is always worth looking into.

The stock ecu is not gonna like all the bs you're gonna be working around. Also, drive by wire sucks. Also, obd2 sucks. What you want is an obd1 1uz. Simplest, strongest, the end.

I would stay away from the vvti, and also go with an earlier motor if you can.
