Default Reengineered rear valve cover??

I just finished talking to a toyota dealer employee who shared with me that his 2001 rx with 189K slowly over time started using oil then recently he noticed serious oil smoke intermittently out the tailpipe and heavy oil consumption between his 3000 mi oil changes. According to him the Toyota mechanic advised him to replace the rear valve cover with a newer designed one which apparantly corrected a design flaw. This flaw would allow oil to be sucked into the pcv valve etc. He said this is one of those things that isnt out there for general knowledge He replaced the valve cover and said it solved the problem. Anyone else heard about this? If this is accurate it would be worth getting the word out.

The only thing that I know of is that for the 2001 series, there was a change in the PCV going from plastic to metal. What I have done with the one on my 99 is hollow the plastic out and really have not had any oil consumption issues.

When you say hollow it out do you mean remove the spring...?
What does that do for you?

Thanks,
John

Default How to hollow out the pcv valve?

I was wondering if you found out what hollowing out the pcv entailed ? Is the goal to increase the ventilation rate?
Thanks for any updates.

Sorry I didn't see this post earlier.

Yes, wanted to increase the ventilation rate and additionally wanted to cut down on clogging.

As I recall, I heated up a paperclip on the stove and stuck it into the PCV valve until the innards melted away.

Default Oil Burning issue resolved.

Well, due to no real relief in the oil burning issue in my RX300 I decided to go ahead and replace the rear valve cover with the newer reengineered one that I discussed in my earlier post, I compared the baffles between the two and the newer one has a much smaller baffle and the ports in the newer one are only on the side,as opposed to 3 large ports on the top of my origional one. I have now put 1000 miles on the car and have not used a drop of oil. I know that this procedure will not improve oil burning in engines that have ring wear or worn valve seals but it definitely cured my particular problem which was a pcv system issue. The newer vavlve cover part number that was ordered for me is 11201-0A060. The cost was $260 and labor was$ 350.

W heras I cant guarantee this will cure your particular problem it is worth keeping in mind.

That's great to hear, thanks for sharing. That might solve the same problem for quite a few people on here. I was having totaly inermitent/random oil consumption (like 1/2 a quart after a long highway drive) that seems to have gone away when I put in a new PVC valve. I have the newer style too, so I guess keep the PVC valve fresh even if you update the valve cover.

Default Now 3000K no oil consumption.

Well I'm happy (and relieved) to report that it has now been 3000 miles since the valve cover changeout and my engine oil consumption issue has completely been resolved. I just changed out the Auto RX rinse phase oil and decided to go with Mobil 1 synthetic hi mileage 5w30. Has anyone else used this hi mileage synthetic and if so were you happy with it?

Thanks, Larry

I've tried a few different versions of the 5W30 from Mobil 1, Trisynthetic, Supersyn, Truck and SUV, Hi mileage. I had consumption issues with them, but they do make some other good grades of oil such as their 5W20, 0W20, 0W30 and 0W40. 0W40 was the best for me. A good oil I found for cleaning was the Pennzoil Ultra 5W30.

Default This sounds promising for my similar problem

Can you please let me know if the part is available with toyota spare parts or elsewhere? I can not see this number 11201-0A060 online on any catalogue
