Post Engine Diagnostic tools and pc tools (includes all trouble codes)

Engine Diagnostic tools oscilloscopes and pc tools (includes all trouble codes)

So we all have an engine diagnostic point located near air filter.
Many of us post "What is wrong with my car engine light is on"
If we went to a dealer we could get the codes but they will charge 1 hour minimum every time they read a code before work is done and obliged to let them do the work. This thread could save money.

Once nearly everyone worked on their own cars with fathers teaching sons
fixing fuel problems road side then came fuel injection and it has bamboozled everyone stopped fixing the car themselves and with better computers on board has come even more confusion.

On older cars eg: 1985 a light bulb could be used and the car computer would produce a kind of Morse code that was a primitive but computerized style of diagnosis but could be done with a bulb or with a special tool that reads out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On-board_diagnostics more info here.

Every Lexus Rx300 Has OBII On-Board Diagnostics II OBDII

OBD II TROUBLE CODES
P1xxx codes are Toyota Specific,
P0xxx relate to all cars.

I want this thread to open eyes to options as some parts that you could buy for under $10 can give engine warning lights and you pay $hundred/s just to find out oh what a feeling. But the price is well justified diagnosis an hours labor min and part/s some eg: clips you may have saved they replace.

Many of these parts only require a basic tool kit to replace.
When the engine light comes on do not drive it in case of damage.
We all know this as every manual in the world reads the same.

What do you use as the Home Mechanic?
Do you give in and pay a lot a dealer to tell you?
Do you have a PC based program?
Do you have a OBDII to USB adapter?
Do you have a OBDII to SCUSI Serial or COM Port?
Do you have a budget OBDII reader?
Do you have any intelligent information you can contribute to this thread?

We all dream of futuristic Fast And The Furious style engine diagnostics how close can you get to this. We could have a laptop or android on board so what applications programs are best for having a PC in the car? Not including (Need For Speed) unless there is a fiero in it.

I would suggest that the mods make it a sticky with the header CEL codes for RX. [Although a search can always find them, but we see too many threads ..help CEL is on ...

A would only add a caution that all CEL should not be treated as bad sensor. [A good majority of them are as the miles/age add up.] In reality the code should be treated as a report with malfunction in certain areas of the machine.

The other point I would like to make is, dont jump to replace the sensor on the first occurrence of the code. Always note and reset the code. When it appears the second time then investigate.

Thank you Australian for posting all the codes.

The OBDII port is under the dash on the driver's side. A $20 code reader gets you a look at the codes. What parts are less than $10?

I think some of the O2 sensor codes are inccoect in this list. Pretty sure that these are right. https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-...cel-codes.html

Carguy,
Not disagreeing with you, there may be other DTC's that are incorrect, but there IS ONE that IS INCORRECT on the link you listed. I have posted a correction on one prominent OBD-2 site but the site must not be monitored because it was never corrected. That is code P1155. I SHOULD READ B2S1 (bank 2 sensor 1) but instead reads (bank 1 sensor 1) IN ERROR. The OP's list is correct in that respect.

I have considered doing a sticky with codes and having links underneath each code linking to a discussion about that code. That would be in the thread that I put at the top about what check engine codes have you had. The only thing is that we seem to get a quirk or situation on a code that we have never encountered before (or never hear back from the person having the code). Even if I look at the service manual and what they suggest on certain codes sometimes doesn't equate to my own or other's personal experiences.

What I may do when I have time is go through the service manual and dig up the actual codes shown in those books, because then there would be a correlation to finding a code and knowing what to do. However, we have had situations in the forum where people go to get a code read and for some odd reason it pulls up a code that is not in the book, but I do know looking at the code that it is similar to another code.

I have also seen situations going from the 1st gen to 2nd gen (and want to see a 3rd gen service manual), where some situations are approached very differently.

You're right, in fact that was one of the codes we were talking about here: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-...and-p1155.html and came to the conclusion that it really is bank 2. Never mind, I think that the list in this post is the correct one and the one that I linked to is the one that is screwed up.

Carguy- I use OBD-Codes.com routinely because I think it is a helpful site but wherever they got the info from was wrong and unfortunately hasn't been corrected. I refer people to that site, but with a disclaimer if it concerns the P1155 code.

ok corrected under the dash

Compatible oem parts are considerably cheaper non oem is better than faulty and used is cheaper again. Need an example ok a 20c spring inside a regulator on back of an alternator. That will give a warning light if not charging.
If you want to contribute post your $20 reader.

There are replaceable springs in the voltage regulator?

No put up a better argument on why a non or used part couldn't cost $10 or just go away your only here to cause conflict.

I think it has more to do with getting fed up when people talk smack and just plain make stuff up. You have so many posts of flat wrong advice with made up stuff (some of it can cause damage to the car) that it peeves me a little. Now if you have to ask the question of "what posts" then that puts you in the dangerous category of the folks that believe their own lies. You know exactly what I'm talking about. If you have something of value to share that that's awesome. If you think you know what might be an issue for someone, then throw it out there with the disclamer that you think it could be this or you know it could be on other cars (like the made up spring thing). That's all just share what you know, but don't make stuff up.

Well am right about conflict why don't you pull an alternator apart and find a spring inside for yourself. Or even google Alternator Regulator Spring it wont make contact without one. As far as advising danger i believe i disclosed danger. If you have made corrections good for you and good for the community if you plan to just cause more conflict i question your motives here.

Actually to simplify my argument about a part under $10 causing light to appear The nut that holds the alternator will do. If loose the belt could flick off.

For the record I do have a couple of old bosche alternators here that i can produce that spring for but the topic has gone from.... What Reader? too i can't prove to Carguy that a part under $10 can cause a light to come on the dash.
