OK..instead of adding on to the 0w20 post in this forum, I've started a new topic and hopefully the mods can sticky this somewhere.

This chart was sent back to me via email from Toyota Canada, after I sent them an email asking which Toyota Vehicles could run 0W20.

It's not Lexus specific (though I just sent an email to Lexus hoping for a Lexus list), but if you didn't already know, your Lexus has a Toyota engine in it. Just find a Toyota vehicle with the same model engine as your Lexus. (i.e. Rx330 uses 3MZ-FE - compare it with Highlander which also used 3MZ-FE - depending on year)

So according to that list,My 2005 RX can use 5W30,5W20,or 0W20?

Thats what I see also for my 07, running 5-30 and garaged and has not moved or changed color in 3000 miles so far.

This is great! That being said, I'd LOVE to see a "Lexus specific" chart...because I could see down the line a warranty claim denied without that.

Sent an email to Lexus Canada today hoping for a similar chart with Lexus vehicles. It took Toyota Canada about a week to respond to the email I sent them, let's hope Lexus is faster.

If you find a chart for Lexus specifically we'd sticky in maintenenace, too many engines missing in this one to do otherwise though and there may be different mfgr recommended oil weights (just like there are sometimes different recommended fuel types) across brands even with the same motor designation.

That may be an official chart for Toyota in Canada but this is what Lexus NA has to say on the issue.

"Dear Mr. Felbab:

I am sorry for any confusion you are experiencing in which oil viscosity to use in your 2004 RX 330. As the manufacturer we are unable to recommend the use of any oil that is not listed in your Owner's Manual. We have not tested any oil not listed in your specific year and model vehicle and can not advise of harm that the use of different products may cause. For your 2004 RX 330, we recommend using oil viscosity 5W-30. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

If you require further assistance, please respond to this e-mail, or contact Lexus Customer Satisfaction at 1-800-255-3987, Monday through Friday, 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., or Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Pacific Time.

So there it is. Use what you want but Lexus NA says to use the oil as specified in your owners manual. No surprise.

I'll have to look in my manual. I think I saw 0w-20 in there. But 5w-20 was acceptable. The change to 20 was so makers could eek out more mpg. I'm not to sure how I feel about 20 in the long term as I don't know if this thin viscosity is good enough. At the very min, choose a 20 that's synthetic. ie.. penzoil plat, Mobil, etc... I don't think a pure dino 20 (if you can even get it) has the shear strength strong enough at that thin of a viscsity.

I apologize in advance if this question has been explained on another thread or elsewhere. What are the benefits from using a different grade of oil than 5w30? I saw in one of the comments on this thread perhaps better fuel mileage.
If its not too much to ask may I get an explanation of different grades of oil along with the pros and cons of each.

Also may I get opinions about running 10w30 or 10W40 for long road trips- vehicle being driven for 23 hours straight only stopping for gas and switching drivers

The MR2 was not sold in Canada in its last generation (ZZW30). Believe the 1999 was the last year it was sold in Canada. FWIW.

Perhaps the OP could ask Toyota why the other years of production are not listed.

Chris, there is no advantage of doing this. The first number in the weight is the viscosity when cold while the second number of the weight is at operating temperature. The higher the numbers the heavier/thicker they are. The lower the numbers the easier it flows and the thinner it is.

I would not run a heavier weight than required in your vehicle(s). A 10W40 would make your engine work harder to overcome the viscosity of the oil. Also, in very cold temps the oil would not flow as quick at startup. As this is where most engine damage occurs this is not very wise.

The best weight to run on these extended trips is exactly the same that you would run in your normal day-to-day driving. As you do not say which RX you have that is more than likely either 5W30 or 5W20. In my 2004 RX330 if I lived in Canada I might run 0W30, such as Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy, to get the oil flowing as fast as possible in my engine on very cold days. As I am in FL there is little need as 5W oil flows fast enough for my needs.
