Guys, I just noticed a doode who sells hood shocks for 90-97 LS400 for around $50 on ebay. He says that the brand is True Lift.
Did anyone buy these from him?
There are two reasons why I'm asking:
1. I know that LS shocks have a "bolt" attached to their ends. These bolts scrue into the body. I don't see any such part in his pictures.
2. He says or at least he used to earlier, that the shaft of the shock is painted (see pic). This consearns me. I remember painting a hood once and overspraying a shock shaft by accident. I iddn't notice that at the time and just closed the hood after the paint was dry. The paint worked like sand paper on the internal seal and the shock was blown instantly.

those would work but go to retrodrives web page on the DIY hood shocks..
because these hood shock on ebay require teh ball joints that are built in the OEm.

pretty much you have to drill them out of your old one and pop them in the aftermarket kind. I have done this and it works great

I saw that mod before, but the guy says that they fit 90-97 LS 400! No mention of any mods.
In addition, if I wanted to do the drilling, I'd pay $20 for a set of shocks in Autozone.
Just wondering what's the deal with this guy.

its ebay, what can you expect..

btw you need to buy 2 sets, retro mis printed it, its 16-20 bucks a shock, so you would almost come out to 50 with the shipping included, but that is backed by autozone and I know they fit

Actually they are the same shocks but the ball mounts come with them so you don't have to drill out the stock ones.

$15 each at Autozone and you use a die-grinder to remove the old ball mount for the old ones.....Plus the Autozone one's have a better charge in them...........and if the ever go bad again can be replaced again without any tools.

Retro's hood shock fix was my very first DIY project on the LS. Very easy if you follow his instructions.

Every time that hood lifts itself, I grin.

Some time ago I read that you can buy a mighty lift to replace your hood struts..... am I dreaming?

As you know, the original (from dealer) costs about $80 each. Mighty lift supposedly cost only $36 for a pair. I went to 2 different local Autozone and they don't have it... they think that they don't have it because Mighty Lift does not make one for Lexus. Is that true?

They don't make them for Lexus. You have to use # 95029 and then drill out your old bolts.

Thanks SharpLS-96! I knew I read it somewhere... but I didn't know that they didn't make one for Lexus. I found it at www.autozone.com search part # C95029. I hope I can retrofit it myself... not good with drill!

If your not handy with a drill don't try drilling out the bolts from the worn out struts, otherwise you might injure yourself trying. See if a local mechanic can do it for a small fee of $10.00 ($5 per strut) or so.
