I have a 99 lexus es300 with 157,000 on the clock. Car drives great and get about 24-25mpg on the highway but would like to try to improve mileage alittle more. I am new to the gasser performance would but have been doing diesels for many years. I am thinking about getting a nice drop in air filter, cleaning spark plugs, and switching to synthetic fluids. Does anyone have any suggestions on something I might be missing? Also what about brands for filter, spark plugs and synthetic fluids for this car? Thanks in advance for the help.

I've got the same vehicle. The car could really use a 5th gear which it doesn't have. Toyota/Denso spark plugs and Mobil1.

If your car has aggressive/high rolling resistance tires, then switching to something less agressive might give a couple %. Make sure properly inflated. I disagree with the door recommendation of 30psi - I put usually 33-34psi.

Your MPG is OK. If your car has no issues and drives great you're not missing anything. Expecting more than 26 on the highway can make you paranoid and start replacing parts unnecessarily. So just relax and enjoy the ride!

i used to be getting 23 consistently doing all city driving, now that its winter, im struggling to get 21 with all highway. i hope its the gas and the conditions and not the car. what you are getting is above average

I don't know about MPG, but full tank last me around 700KMs. Or if i do some city driving will last me around 630KMs. I usually use cruse control when i drive and airconditioner is on 95%.

use lighter oil (5w30), inflate tire to correct psi, check suspension, lightfoot gas, less braking, more highway driving if possible, get quality best money can buy spark plugs, don't idle your car too long, check o2 sensors, clean air filter or replace with k&n, sea foam to clean fuel system/engine, weight reduction like replace panels to carbon fiber, remove a/c system if u can live w/o it, remove spare, etc..), turn off acc. (sounds, ac, & heat), and switch to leds
im pretty sure theres alot more if u really want to save gas like aerodynamics, thats if u wanna go that far

note:
less voltage current draws less load on your battery, usually if u don't upgrade battery or have a capacitor
for es300 dont think theres no aftermarket body parts made of carbon fiber, just oem
yup it, does depend on your terrain, climate, sea level, and humidity level
really depends on how u drive and maintain your vehicle

Really? I never got less than 26 in my '98 on the times I checked it, and my best trip mileage was 29.6 mpg. A '99 should get at least the same, thanks to VVT. I never did anything special to it, except all synthetic fluids.

I wish my '05 got the same gas mileage.

You are getting pretty much what these things get. My 2000 gets 25-26 at 75 mph, my 97 gets 26-27. You can do all that stuff if you want, but don't expect a significant change in mileage. The air filter is likely to have no effect at all, and neither are the spark plugs unless they are very old. Synthetic fluids will help some, and make sure the tires are properly inflated, but don't expect very much of a benefit from either. The way you drive is going to have a much greater impact. For highway mileage, the best way to increase fuel economy is to slow down. Otherwise, drive smoothly, use a light foot, minimize braking, empty the trunk of junk, don't run the ac if you don't have to, don't idle unnecessarily. All the usual old fogey advice.

i think im getting under 20 mpg with a rear passenger bad strut, all the necessary junk in the trunk, and music wangin all the time. u got think besides what is necessary to operate the vehicle properly. everything else is an accessory whether its from using your a/c to heat, sub box, spare tire, equipment, etc. so point is that, it all cost u for your gas. maybe a performance battery (higher amperage) like optima will really help the load off for the electronics part. you can go green by converting your fuel to hydrogen or vegetable oil (diesel).

note- maybe i should try moving all the heavy stuff to to the drivers (good) rear side lol or.....i could just replace the strut asap, also replacing sub box to just the sub in the factory enclosure w/o the box...something along that way
