I see owners writing about timing chain adjustments on their car. I don't see anything in my service manual about doing that. All i see is change oil, filters, rotate tires, and check nuts and bolts.

No timing chain in an SC430. Timing belt. Change at about 90-100 thousand miles.

Most 02 owners are considering or have done it regardless of miles. 8 years is typically 96k for average mileage.

I've always heard that Lexus recommends every 6 years OR 90,000 miles.

108 months (9 years)? So where did the six year thing come from? We've been talking about having '02 & '03 timing belts replaced for ages. But that's not accurate, according to this.

I was lead to believe that it was 6 years also by my Lexus service advisor and another shop also. I just checked my owner's manual and it says that the information is in the owner's supplement manual (arggg!), which didn't come with my car, of course.

Found it. On page 104 of the Supplement Maintenance Manual, it states 90,000 miles or 72 months. Of course, this is for a 2002 SC430. Maybe your information SCDROPTOP was for a different model year. Here is the Lexus link for that manual.

That's a great link, Harold. Thanks. And just as you suspected, it looks like what Lexus recommends as far as the timing belt does, in fact, depend on the year of your car.

Here's the manual for a 2007 SC 430, and it says the timing belt should be at 108 months, or 90k miles. Notice, that there's not an interval of "72 months or 90,000 miles" in this manual. Strange.....

it's the same engine. and from what i can tell, the same part number. so it's a little odd they would change the recommendation.

Perhaps they've accumulated enough statistical information to be able to state that it will last longer now (& didn't bother to update the older documentation) or determined that the older parts just are harder on the belts.
