he was looking at the volkswagon rabbit to replace it.

A 1984 500sec is not a clunker, you hold on to that car for dear life and never let go haha

We're thinking about trading in. We could get at least $1500 more for our van this way than if we sold it.

My dad traded in his 2000 Dodge Caravan for a 2009 Toyota Highlander, I think he said he got $3500, the weeks before that the most he was offered was $1800.

That didn't look like the cars.gov website, so it looks like it might be a dealer version before the car is being traded

Hmm...a dealer I went to said the car doesn't have to be running and they will tow it there if they have to. A different dealer said it had to be in driving conditions which the site clearly states.

I really don't see why it has to be in running conditions because they're not allowed to sell the motor or drive train.

They will sell other parts from the car and then dispose the rest of it.

In fact, they're required under the law to disable the engine by draining the oil, putting in a sodium silicate solution, and running the engine at high RPMs until it seizes and will not restart. There's some truly horrific videos of the procedure on youtube. On a non-running car, they could always just swap the fluids, verify that it doesn't start, and say they killed it.

One of my coworkers traded in a 2000 Mercury Villager that by his estimate was worth $200 at best (huge rust problem, poor running, previous rat infestation) for a 2009 Highlander 4-banger and got the full $4500.

Apparently not to the local Lexus dealers... I've take it to both local dealers and they wont budge over $2K. They say it's mainly because of the high mileage. I have 198k on it... Other than that... it's in great condition.

The idea behind cash for clunkers I believe is to remove cars that have poor gas mileage. If your car can't start to begin with, there is no point for them to buy your clunker.

there is a 45K limit on the car. and yes, it works because that limit is for the base. the base price of the car cannot exceed 45K, but with options no problem
