I am thinking of changing my plugs in the near future with the NGK iridium plugs and wanted to find out if there is anything out of the ordinary I need to know beforehand.

Outside of taking off the Plastic Engine cover, is there anything else that needs to be removed to access the plugs?

I understand this engine does not utilize traditional type spark plug wires, I haven't done this type before, I have replaced plugs in the past on other cars but haven't seen this type of setup before. to remove the covers on the plugs is it as simple as just unscrewing the screws? Does anything other than the plugs themselves need to be replaced?

If anyone has a turorial on changing the plugs on a 2001-2006 LS430 please post the link.

Yup. It's pretty straight forward. Remove the engine cover and then unbolt the 2 bolts holding each coil pack to the engine. You can pull (wiggle) the coil pack out and the spark plug will be exposed. Nothing too hard.

Great, Thanks. One more thing, do you happen to know how tight to torque the plugs and do the plugs require gapping or do they come pre gapped, I plan to order the Denso SK20R11 plugs Thanks

They come pre-gapped already.

The torque spec is 13-14ftlbs. It doesn't need to be exact since most torque wrench are not calibrated to the same degree.

Just be careful removing the coil packs - I am sure they are pretty expensive to replace

Yep. Just a hint for you. Remove the 2 screws that hold each coil packs on. Twist back and forth while pulling on the coil packs. The rubber boots have a tendency to stick to the plugs a little. Use a dab of di-electric grease inside each boot when you put them back on, to make sure its easy to get them off next time.

howdy from Texas! I just changed my spark plugs on my 2005 LS430 that has 148,000 miles. These are the original spark plugs. The process was much easier then I expected. It seems even with 148,000 miles the original spark plugs look ok. What do you think? One thing that was to my surprise is left second to last cylinder when I put the socket the original spark plug was loose. I hand removed it. I also noticed the cylinder hole along with the spark plug long tube cover was cruddy. Looking at the spark plug itself looked to be better condition then the rest. Maybe it was firing but not getting full compression due to it being loose? The car was driving smooth before just crappy MPG. Anyway I changed all eight and took car for test drive. Engine feels smoother and slightly more power. I did notice an exhaust smell but thinking this is due to built up in this one cylinder of carbon and lack of full compression. Thoughts? I used a torque wrench and set it for 15 foot pounds

Since there are long life spark plugs i like to put tiny dabs of anti seize compound on the threads (dont slather on, just blot on the threads a bit) just so they can come out easier 80-100K later.
