Question How to get keys made

Do you have to go to a dealer to have duplicate keys made for a Lexus? I only got one from the previous owner and do not want to spend big bucks at the dealer for an extra key.

Thats interesting about the chip, and to add additional difficulty - the key is "hollowed out" as apposed to a shaved piece of metal.

Microchip? what MY SC do you have?. MY key simply holds the innards for keyless entry which can be swapped. Regarding the cut, try asking a key making store about it.

Not bad, only 47 for a valet key and they have wallet keys for 38 that definetly do not have a chip on it. Still wondering if anyone has ever had a key made at a regular key shop for a few bucks - like normal cars, LOL.

I don't think it is possible, unless the regular key shop had the machinery to do it.

Here in Ottawa, Canada (population ~1 million), when I called the large, established local Lexus dealership to get keys cut, they told me they send all key requests/orders out to Toronto, Canada (four hours drive away) to get them done. I doubt they would do that if it was just a matter of some simple key cutting machine.

I purchased keys from lexus-parts.com (Sewell Lexus) a few months back, and they arrived fast and worked great. Be prepared to send a copy of your license and registration (exactly the same as my local dealership demanded for cutting keys). Their price of $47 can't be beat -- the local dealer wanted ~$260 a key to cut them for me (including the price of the key itself).

I actually do this for a living, if your is a pre 97 i believe it wont have a transponder. Mine is a 93 and it doesnt, it is however a routered cut we do them for $35-$40. They will however not have a lexus logo because they are generic ilco or kyko blanks. If it has a transponder im not sure, i have a programmer comming for them but dont know how much the blanks are going to be. I program all domestic transponder keys for $35 so the lexus will probably run around $60 when i get them in... If you want one with a key pad then you have to goto the dealer...

what year is ur SC? i didnt think 92-00 SC key had the chip in it. When i had my 95 i just went to a key cutting place ask them if they had lexus key blanks and if they did i got them to cut me a key. 20$ is what each key cost me. If they dont have the blank you can order it on ebay and call around to places and ask them if they have the machine to cut lexus keys.

I have a 93 with the transponder in it. But luckily my car came with 2 master keys, 2 valet keys, and a wallet key.

I have a 1995 SC400 that I bought used. Came with only one key that does have a transponder which lets me open the door remotely. I need a backup and didn't want to drop a lot of cash. Very interesting that you found a key cutting place that could do the Lexus routing. Thanks to all.

All SC keys from 98 to 00 have transponders in them, including the wallet key. The wallet key transponder is in the black key holder. You have to place the key holder near the steering column when using the wallet key to start the car.
