Toyota will likely add a version of its premium sedan, or the Lexus LS430, to the lineup of alternative fuel vehicles. The hybrid LS430 will provide improved fuel economy, and the hybrid system will be used in part as a supercharger to help accelerate the vehicle..."

"... What Edmunds.com Says: If Lexus can inject some style, size and a hybrid drivetrain into its next flagship sedan, there won't be much holding it back from rolling over the competition.
What We Know: Lexus is currently working on a fully redesigned version of its flagship LS430 luxury sedan. Dubbed the LS460, the new model will not only feature a larger 4.6-liter V8 and more expressive styling, it's also expected to add both hybrid and long-wheelbase models to the lineup. The 2006 LS430 is known for having a shorter wheelbase than competitors like the Mercedes S Class and BMW 7-Series, but the long wheelbase version of the 2007 LS460 will compete favorably with anything in its class. With a larger displacement V8 under the hood, more power is certainly on the way, but what will really set the new LS apart is the option of a hybrid drivetrain. Expected to be one of the world's first hybrids to couple a V8 gasoline engine with an electric motor, the LS600h will be the top of the line Lexus sedan. Expect to see the LS460 and LS460L go on sale in the Fall of 2006 with sales of the LS600h following soon thereafter. ..."

Now to keep up with the times performance #'s need to be in the high 5's to sixty and high 13's in the qtr mile. So I expect to the new LS to be equally as fast as the new GS
I would hope, as a middle-aged man (47 years of age), that Lexus remakes the LS with the "younger man" in mind. I was lured over from BMW three years ago by the LS after the decling delivery of my 745 (to replace my 540) by a number of well known Lexus traits. The only missing pieces of the LS puzzle in my minds eye are styling and handling which are more than adequate by not "BMW like" - I would add, or more correctly state, subtract styling from BMW-like traits since Mr. Bangle ruined what was once the most beautiful large sports sedan on the planet (and once upon a time, my dream car). In three years of ownership, my LS has been the most amazing car I have ever owned; my dealerships (Greenwich, CT) servicing of it too has been totally amazing.
If Lexus aims at a slightly younger population in terms of styling and performance the competition would be over. I would aim at the MB S55AMG for performance, at the BMW 740iL for large sedan handling, and the Maserati Quattroporte for styling -- my wish list of course. Keep the quality, service, reliability, and electronics "Lexus-like" and the game is over.
In fact, I have been trying to follow up on the rumor that Lexus is going to introduce a two-seat mid engine V10 "go-cart" like they showed at the NY Auto show this year. Sign me up on that bad boy. I would bring home a friend for my '02 LS so she wouldn't feel too lonely
That would be a nice combo for this "older" buyer.
And I agree with you about the sub 5.0 second 0-60.
I hope Lexus has identified that there is sizeable quantity of us older more mature buyers who don't want to be caught dead in their father's Sedan deVille.
& yes, I don't think the OP means a real supercharger, but an electric motor that acts like a supercharger for additional pwer/torque, but better gas mileage
