How-To Tuesday: Disarming That Annoying Seat Belt Alarm in Your Lexus IS

Sure, we recommend wearing a seat belt all the time, it just makes sense. But sometimes that darn seat belt alarm goes off when you just don’t want it too.

Maybe you have something heavy in your passenger seat? Or perhaps you’re just cleaning your car and you need it running for a sec. Or heck, maybe you’re well aware that many accidents occur close to home, but you just want to live life on the edge and dart across the street for a Subway sandwich, sans seat belt. But right when the adrenaline starts to kick in, you get that annoying little seat belt alarm, like your mom telling you to finish your vegetables. Well, there’s a way to shut that off.

This week’s How-To Tuesday article (and the corresponding video below) walks you through the four simple steps that it takes to permanently shut down the “no seat belt” alarm in your Lexus IS, between the years 2005 and 2014. The fix is quite easy really, and the article walks you through every step specifically. But here’s a quick rundown to get you started.

Just step inside your IS (don’t forget to take a second to realize how lovely it is in there), close the doors, and put on your seat belt. Keep your foot off the brake and turn on the car. Make sure your counter is set to lifetime odometer mode, and then change the trip meter to read “ODO.” Now turn off the car.

Then you push the start button twice, making sure not to fully start the car. When the dash light comes on, hold down the trip reset button for about 30 seconds. While still depressing the button, buckle your seat belt (driver’s side). Now your display should read either “B off” or “Seat Belt Buzzer Off,” and just like that, you’re living on the edge!
