How-To Tuesday: Changing Your Lexus IS’s Power Steering Fluid
Power steering is one of those beautiful things that you don’t really ever think about. Until you’re forced to.
If you’ve noticed your steering wheel feeling a little stiff, there’s a good chance there’s not enough fluid flowing through the power steering system. However, if you see visible leaks under the car, that’s probably a good indication you’ve got a damaged hard line or power-steering pump.
Hopefully that’s not the case, and it’s just a matter of getting your fluids up. Because changing out the power-steering fluid is far easier and cheaper then having to take your ride into the shop. It should honestly only take you about 10 to 15 minutes, and shouldn’t cost you more than 20 bucks.
This week’s How-To Tuesday article walks you through the three easy steps involved in changing out your Lexus IS’s power steering fluid. All you need to get started is a hobby fuel bottle, a turkey baster, or a 1/2″ OD vinyl tube, some replacement fluid, a few rags, and a disposable container. After that, it’s just a matter of removing the old fluid, which make take more than one attempt. Then you just refill the reservoir with new power steering fluid, just below the max line. And finally, start the car, rotate the steering wheel left and right and few times, and you’re back to smooth, worry-free steering.
