Rumor Mill: Toyota Developing V6 Turbo for Lexus GS, Possibly Supra
There’s lots of rumors flying around Lexus and Toyota at the moment, so take this for what you will. But it all sounds promising in theory.
According to Top Speed (via Japanese media outlet Mag-X), Lexus “is finally building a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, codenamed 943F, that it plans to use on the fifth-generation Lexus GS.” The 2019 model should come out with the next GS redesign, possibly late next year or early 2018.
For those of you not seeped in ToMoCo history, you’re probably thinking: “Oh boy, a new turbo V6.” Because a lot of cars have V6s. But not a lot of Toyota cars. If you can believe it, TS says the engine will actually be the first production V6 in Toyota’s existence.
Somehow Top Speed seems to think this means the GS will share the new V6 with the new ToMoCo/BMW joint-venture Supra. But I’m still a little fuzzy on that math.
Regardless, the prospect of a turbo V6 would certainly increase competitive range for both Lexus and Toyota. So yeah, what’s not to like?
