Everything We Can Tell You About Driving the 2015 Lexus NX
Because there were folks flying in from all over the world to cover the launch, driving impressions are embargoed until July 6th at 11 p.m. Eastern. Sorry about the bait and switch there. So what can I say about the NX? Well, absolutely nothing about pricing, really. Other than saying it would be "competitive" with other premium compact crossovers, the Lexus brass didn't budge when the assembled automotive scribes pressed for hard numbers. Most likely that's because there are still battalions of green-visor-wearing accountants sweating over their calculators and fighting about figures. This is standard operating procedure across the industry, so don't expect pricing until shortly before it hits showrooms toward the end of the year.
Now, the Lexus RX has owned the premium crossover market since it invented the category back in 1998, and everyone with whom I spoke was certain the younger sibling wasn't going to cannibalize sales from the 100,000-per-year-unit mover. Personally? I'm not so certain.
All the editors at ClubLexus have been big fans of the NX's aggressive styling since we saw the concept, and when I first saw the production sheet metal, I thought Takeaki Kato and his team did a fantastic job translating fantasy into reality. So even though the NX is being targeted at younger, first-time luxury buyers, I think there are more than a few potential RX buyers that'll be swayed by the younger sibling's sexy styling. Will the siphoned sales add up to more than a rounding error? I can't say, but I will bet there's a facelift in the mail to insure the RX doesn't look soft next to the newcomer.
Stay tuned for a full review of the all-new NX. For now, check out some sweet new pics of it out in the--literal--wild! High-res shots after the thumbs.
