“Source Familiar With Lexus Planning” Says RC Convertible Not Dead Yet

Given that the RC was designed to be a convertible from the beginning, it was disappointing when Motor Trend reported that plans to lop the top off the sporty new coupe had been shelved to make way for a new three-row SUV. But reports of its death might have been exaggerated.
Automotive News is reporting that Lexus is still considering the a production version of the LF-C2 concept which debuted at the LA Auto Show last month. While Jeff Bracken, Lexus Division general manager has repeatedly stressed that the LF-C2 was never destined for production, other sources say the discussion about whether it could eventually end up in showrooms is ongoing:

Bracken says the LF-C2 was “purely a concept” and not slated for production. But according to a person familiar with Lexus’ planning, the brand is considering whether to produce a version of it to sell as the convertible RC — an affordable, sporty stablemate for its newest coupe — or to build a convertible version of the much more exclusive LF-LC concept it showed in 2012 at the Detroit auto show.”

Obviously, the best case scenario is Lexus releases both cars. But given that the brand needs to have a somewhat affordable convertible–the IS C is getting long in the tooth–if it doesn’t want to be outgunned by its rivals in the luxury segment, I would bet against the LF-LC being the sole new option. But we’ll have to wait and see.
