Lexus Leads Grand-Am Cup Points Triple Crown

By -
TORRANCE, California – Team Lexus maintains its lead atop all three of the championship point categories heading into round three of the Grand-Am Cup North American Street Stock series, April 19.

The UnitedAuto Touring 250 at Phoenix International Raceway in Phoenix, Ariz., will feature Team Lexus and its stable of Lexus IS 300 sport sedans competing in the Grand-Am Cup Series’ Sport Touring I (ST1) class championship.

Owned and operated by veteran road-racing driver/owner Chuck Goldsborough, Team Lexus currently leads the ST1-class driver, manufacturer and team championship points standings. Piloting the three IS 300s will be driver championship points leaders Jean-Francois Dumoulin and Tim Gaffney, and teammates Daniel Dror, Jr., Ian James, Andy Lally, as well as Goldsborough.

“It’s great to be leading all three points categories so early in the season,” said Goldsborough. “The points lead really gives Team Lexus great momentum going into Phoenix and proves what a natural race car the IS 300 is.” After successful campaigns in SCCA, IMSA, and Speedvision Cup, Goldsborough launched Team Lexus in 1999.

With support from Lexus and technical assistance from Toyota Racing Development (TRD), Team Lexus initiated a development program to prepare the new Lexus IS 300 for competition in 2001. The team debuted two IS 300s in the 2001 Grand-Am Cup North American Street Stock Series at Phoenix in April 2001.

The compact sport sedan was competitive immediately, earning its first pole position in its fourth race at Mosport and a victory at Virginia International Raceway in its fifth.

For the 10-race 2002 Grand-Am Cup series, Team Lexus will compete in virtually stock Lexus IS 300s powered by a production-based 3.0-liter, inline six-cylinder engine with a TRD-equipped engine management system. The high-revving IS 300 race-prepared engine shares the strong low-end and mid-range torque features of its production counterpart, while the compact sport sedan’s ideal balance and steering response thrive on the track.
