2011 Lexus GX Review
The 2011 Lexus GX remains unchanged for the 2011 model year. It underwent a major overhaul in 2010, so it stays pretty much the same for this year. The GX 460 is a mid-size luxury SUV that competes with the Land Rover LR4 and the Mercedes Benz M-Class.
Models – The GX 460 comes in two different models. The 460 is the base
model. The 460 Premium adds a couple of performance and safety features
and the interior gets some luxury upgrades. They both share the same 301
horsepower, 4.6 liter V-8. The engine cranks out 329 foot-pounds of
torque, which means it can pull a whopping 6,500 pounds. Both models
have a full time 4-wheel-drive system and a 6-speed automatic
transmission. The GX is built on a truck base and sits on 18 inch
wheels. There is only one transmission option, a 6-speed automatic. The
GX 460 Premium benefits from automatic load leveling and a driver
selectable suspension. The GX base starts at $52,000 and the GX premium
kicks the starting price up to $57,000. There are options and packages
that will run the price up even higher.
Standard Features -The GX comes standard with a number of luxury
features. Its a large vehicle with enough room for seven passengers
spread across three rows. The third row folds completely into the floor
which allows for more cargo space. The GX sports a leather interior with
heated and ventilated front seats. A moon-roof and a 4.2-inch display
are standard. The display doubles as a rear view camera and a display of
various vehicle functions. Automatic dual zone climate control keeps
everyone comfortable. Bluetooth connectivity and a USB port makes
talking on the phone or plugging in the iPod quick and easy. The premium
version comes with a heated steering wheel and rear seat HVAC controls.
A voice activated navigation system and dual screen entertainment are
optional. A premium audio system is also an option.
Safety – The GX 460 and 460 Premium are loaded with safety features.
They both have a vehicle stability control system that is operated via
engine power reduction. Traction control and 4-wheel ABS are standard. A
total of 10 airbags ensure that everyone is safe in the event of an
accident. Active front headrests are standard, as are rain sensing
windshield wipers. Brake assist, electronic brake distribution and a
tire pressure monitor make sure the vehicle stays on the road.
Fuel Economy – The GX 460 gets 15 mpg in the city and 20 on the highway.
Industry Reviews – The GX 460 is a big SUV in the world of crossovers.
Industry critics find the 460 to be an excellent if somewhat impractical
vehicle. Lexus only expects to sell about 14,000 of these in 2011. The
people that end up buying them will not be disappointed. The interior is
rated as one of the best in class, as is the performance. Towing your
boat down to the lake will be easy with its massive towing capacity, and
the huge interior has room for the entire extended family. If you are
in need of a large truck based SUV and don’t mind the less than stellar
MPG ratings, the GX 460 should be on your short list of vehicles to
consider.
