We really don’t know a whole lot of details of the upcoming sports car that will be built by a joint venture between Toyota and BMW. We know it’ll be a sports coupe of some kind, but when it comes to size, engine, powertrain or anything else, we just have no idea. A new report now suggests that neither company is going to build the car themselves, but rather a third-party.

That third party is called Magna-Steyr, and they build cars for other manufacturers. If a vehicle isn’t high enough volume, or the OEM just doesn’t want to put the time into building something, they contact Magna-Steyr. This Austrian company builds Aston Martin Rapide, and is known for building tough off-roaders.

According to German newspapers, through Automotive News Europe, Magna-Steyr is discontinuing production of the Mini Paceman and Countryman, and are preparing to tackle the sports car project.

The BMW is expected to start production in 2018, with the Toyota version coming a little bit later. Our friends at Jalopnik suggest that it’ll be a similar launch to the Fiat 124 Spider and the Mazda MX-5 Miata, or the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT86.

A 2018 launch means we can’t be too far away from seeing a concept or getting some more information about the car. Once we get it, we’ll share it with you!

What do you think? Let us know over in the forums!
