With the World’s Press Watching, Lexus Pulls the Wraps Off All-New Lexus LS Flagship Sedan at NAIAS in Detroit

The North American International Auto Show is typically a big stage for Lexus. In previous years we’ve seen some of its best-selling models unveiled at the iconic show, with the upcoming Lexus LC being the most recent. And 2017 was without exception.

With the world’s press watching, Lexus pulled the wraps off the all-new Lexus LS flagship sedan. It’s hard to believe that it was 28 years ago that the luxury manufacturer unveiled the first-generation LS in Detroit. Back then the flagship sedan was somewhat of an oddity, though some called it a milestone. The LS has grown to become a staple in Japanese luxury, and it has survived much longer than some were willing to bet.

“Not only will the LS symbolize the Lexus brand, it will become the definitive new-generation luxury car embodying Japanese tradition and culture,” said Toshio Asahi, chief engineer for the new LS. “As such, this global pinnacle must go far beyond what the world expects from a luxury car.”

The all-new 2018 LS boasts a bold new look with a coupe-like silhouette that does not compromise. Whether it’s interior roominess, cutting-edge design, and visionary technology, it’s got it. In addition, it will be built on an extended version of the all-new global architecture GA–L premium rear-wheel drive platform. Therefore, it will share traits with the LC—for a more dynamic experience on the road. One trait that will not be shared, is the LS’s new Shiatsu massaging seats available in the new LS.

Lexus claims the 3.5-liter V6 engine will produce V8-level power, yet V6 fuel efficiency. The new engine will generate 415 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. As a result, Lexus expects a 0-60 mph time of approximately 4.5 seconds for the rear-wheel drive model.

The 2018 LS wasn’t alone on the world stage, as the UX Concept four-seater crossover made its North American debut following its unveiling at the Paris Motor Show in September of last year. In addition, the sci-fi-ish Lexus Kinetic Seat Concept also made its first American appearance, as did the 3-D Human Machine Interface UX interior.

Stay tuned as we bring you live coverage from the 2017 North American International Auto Show!
