Death Proof: Three Toyota Vehicles on IIHS Zero-Fatality List
Obviously, this isn’t a license to drive your Lexus RX 350 4WD into a wall for sport. But a just-released Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study showed that between 2009 and 2012, no driver died behind the wheel of the mid-size luxury crossover, making it only one of nine vehicles to score a perfect record for preventing fatalities.
It’s worth nothing that a third of these “Death Proof” cars were Toyotas.
To be fair, the IIHS doesn’t have a formal “Death Proof” designation, in the same way it doesn’t have a “Dangerous as Hell” classification. Yahoo Auto’s Justin Hyde brought the Tarentino title into the conversation with his excellent breakdown of the study, and you have to admit it’s pretty perfect.
We’ll probably never live in a world free of vehicular death—even vending machines kill a couple people annually—but this report shows that the ever-more-vigilant safety systems automakers adopt make real life and death differences.
And it’s another reason for Toyota engineers to be proud.
