2016 Lexus RC F GT Concept Bests the Best in Lightning Lap 2016
Five years ago, would you have believed me if I told you that Lexus sent two cars to compete among the world’s top performance vehicles in Car and Driver‘s Lightning Lap? What if I told you that Lexus also bested every other vehicle in the competition?
Unless you’re extremely prescient, I’m going to guess the answer would have been no. But here we are, in the midst of the F performance movement, and that’s exactly what happened.
At the venerable car mag’s annual event, the 2016 Lexus RC F GT Concept beat 20 of the greatest performance cars around by posting a lightning fast time of 2:43.2 around the longest, possibly best road course in America: Virginia International Raceway.
Bear in mind, the one-off prototype is “effectively a race car” and wasn’t competing in any of the five price classes C&D laid out, since it has no retail price tag. But even though the concept was built for the track, it’s still quite impressive that it topped such standouts as the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR, the 2016 Ferrari 488GTB, the 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS, the 2016 McLaren 570S, and the 2017 Acura NSX, among others.
The 2016 Lexus GS F was also invited to compete at the 2016 Lightning Lap, and put up a respectable time of 3:05.9, although it did finish last in its price class behind the 2016 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, the 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4, and the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport, the class winner with an impressive 2:47.1 time.
