2016 GS 200t Fuel Economy Shows Why Lexus Is Going Turbo

Now that the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance is over, and the 2016 Lexus GS models have been officially unveiled, let’s take a closer look at what we’ve learned, particularly how it relates to turbos.

With the GS 200t news coming on the heels of Lexus’s earlier announcement of the IS 200t, we can see a trend developing. And thanks to the fuel economy numbers, we get an idea of why.

Though we still don’t know the IS’s official numbers, the new 2.0-liter turbo in the GS 200t will boast 241 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, and is expected to get a healthy 33 miles per gallon on the highway. That fuel economy estimate is significantly better than the 2015 GS 350’s 3.5-liter V6 (29 highway), and nearly as good as the 2015 GS 450h’s hybrid (34 highway).

We don’t have the GS 200t’s combined rating yet, but Torque News is guessing “that the combined fuel economy rating of the GS 200t will be about 10% better than the GS 350’s.”

So you can easily see the benefits of the turbo at the pump. And we’re expecting to feel the benefits on the road as well, as the hp and torque numbers would suggest.

Performance and fuel economy are two great things that go great together, so we can’t wait to see what other turbo options we’ll be seeing in a Lexus dealership soon.
